Lockdown Lab #6 — SoundLab

Lockdown Lab is a place for Heart n Soul to showcase the new ways our artists are finding to make new work, experiment creatively, and spend time together during lockdown. Read on to find out what our artists have been up to, and watch and listen to some of their experiments!

Danielle and Rosie…

… had their best sessions yet! Zoom has a new setting which makes it easier to record music, so Rosie and Danielle were able to make a new recording of Danielle’s new song WATYAGUNNADO?, which is a song about all the things Danielle is going to do once lockdown is over! Listen below!

After they recorded the first half, they then spent time thinking about the first song from Danielle’s album, which she plans to work on this week by creating some artwork for the visual album book that will accompany the music. You can see some of the drawings above!

Danielle and Rosie also started working on a new track called Can’t Stop Drawing. Danielle created the melody on Google Chrome Music Lab and Rosie worked on it in Ableton, then they both wrote the lyrics with Danielle’s mum! Listen to an unfinished version of the song below.

Danielle is a visual artist and singer-songwriter, who makes art about people and things that are important to her. She likes doing art, crafts, sewing and making music.

Rosie is a visual artist and musician who works on lots of different fun projects!

Aldean and Lindsay…

… had a catch up, then carried on working on Love Defeats Hate. Aldean is getting more and more confident using Ableton! Aldean and Lindsay worked together on an arrangement edit, where Aldean inserted 16 bars to make a bridge and did some experimenting with different piano chords.

Lindsay showed Aldean the ‘punch in’ feature of Ableton, where you can record cleanly in a gap without erasing previously recorded material. They also did some percussion experimentation, changing the pitch as it was recording. Watch a little clip of them working together above!

Aldean is a musician and performer. He created the Aldean Blair Multiverse, an interactive performance installation which features original music and specially created costumes.

Lindsay is a music facilitator, producer and musician. He also plays in the bands Sauna Youth, Marcel Wave and OBLATE.

Isaac and Charles…

… had a lyric writing session! They have been working on a new song with the working title of Planet Earth. Isaac and Charles use an app called Bandlab in order to make music collaboratively whilst they are both at home. Isaac enjoys the recording process, and likes looking for instruments on Bandlab to add to the song, especially finding new sounds and playing beats! They added a second verse to the verse and a chorus they had already worked on, and you can listen to a clip of the work in progress below!

Isaac is a musician and performer. He is a member of the band Too Hot For Candy, and specialises in big beats and funky drumming!

Charles is a singer-songwriter and musician. He has performed in Grace Jones’ live band and in Heart n Soul’s The Fish Police.
